Job Purpose:

Manufacturing Engineer Manager overseas the daily activities of the Manufacturing Engineering staff as well as the Tooling Department. Focus areas:
Manufacturing launches of new products and associated tooling and equipment. Responsible for continuous improvement activities to meet business unit cost and productivity targets. Process and technology expert and technical support to optimize the shop floor operation to ensure safety quality cost and delivery efficiencies

Direct subordinates / organization / travelling (percentage, scope)

  • Lead the Oregon Manufacturing Engineering team (approx. 6) as well as the Tooling department lead (1)
  • Travel requirement less than 10%
  • Travel required for capex project interaction with equipment suppliers

Key interfaces and stakeholders

Majority of focus will be local with some regional interaction and project sharing

Project Managers / Product Managers

  • Main internal customer for NPD related product function and project completion

Design Engineers:

  • Provided new product design work, advise new product intent and importance of design features and components
  • Provides cost estimates, advice on design manufacturability

Sourcing Specialists

  • Provide technical support and manufacturing knowledge and resources

Quality and Manufacturing Engineers:

  • Provide direction and deep product and manufacturing knowledge in order to resolve quality issues or drive process and cost improvement activities

General Manager and Production Supervisors:

  • Technical partner and support entity for the shop floor related to current and new equipment and capex project management

Key Responsibilities
The Manufacturing Engineer Manager will be a member of the Woods Operations Team reporting to the General Manager and responsible for managing the Manufacturing Engineers and Tooling department and associated capital and operating budgets, strategies and projects.

Individual responsibilities

  • As member of new product development team, participate in project, Design for Manufacturability reviews, FMEA, quality planning and design review meetings
  • Provide design for manufacturability support, help choose manufacturing processes and materials to achieve design intent and cost targets
  • Assumes cost, quality, and delivery responsibility for assigned product lines; creates applicable documentation, direct the ME. Team to resolve day-to-day production issues, improves existing processes
  • Develops work instructions, routings and other documents to support the product quality and design integrity.
  • Provides upfront cost analysis for manufacturing processes before design release.
  • Designs product line layouts, workstation layouts, equipment and material flow layouts, and stocking programs.
  • Initiates the design and construction of tooling, fixtures, and assembly aids.
  • Establishes and enforces costing process standards
  • Teaches and coaches department members on department processes

Shared responsibilities (if applicable)

  • Troubleshoot existing and new product problems, working in team environment to solve product function and quality issues
  • Drive cost improvements in existing product lines including efficiency improvement projects at suppliers overseas
  • Drive improvements in new product development process around process capability studies, first article through pilot run release, etc.

    KPIs and Targets
  • Delivery new product to market on time at the proper quality and cost
  • Responsible for annual cost improvement projects and capital budget management
  • Assist in overall shop floor efficiency gains through recommended layout, equipment, and process optimization

    Education:

  • Completed Bachelor s Degree in Manufacturing Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or equivalent degree

    Experience & knowledge:

  • 5-8 years in a role with similar responsibilities.
  • Experience managing multiple NPD projects of various size at one time
  • Experience with Design to Value, DFMEA, PFMEA
  • Experience developing and managing capital and departmental budgets
  • Ability to work autonomously and see project driven to completion
  • Work well cross functionally with several departments (Design, Marketing, Production, Quality, Finance)
  • Prefer lean training and experience, Green or Black belt not needed but helpful
  • Proficient at the Microsoft Office suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc)
  • SAP experience required
  • Welding, fabrication, painting, assembly experience a plus

  • The team structure needs additional bench strength and will require adding and training new staff to position the departments for the future.
